Blogger Books: Are They Worth Reading?

blogger books, book props blog

The Fashion Book - Alice Mackrell
This book is super cool. It details some of the world's most fabulous designers, models and photographers and is very inspirational. It's kind of like the bible for huge designers and influential photographers, so this is a must-hage for any fashion fan. It's also an amazing gift for the right person. If you buy this for someone with no interest in fashion or design, it's kind of like "oh.." when you open it. 3/5

#GIRLBOSS - Sophia Amoruso
I think there's something magical, reading about someone going from rags to riches. And I don't just mean reading a magazine about Zoella, I mean reading about someone who really put the work in and actually deserved the success. Nasty Gal is a huge brand and this book is a funny and realitsic account of the struggles Sophia Amoruso went through to get the company she it is today. It's a great read and a nitty gritty, no holds-barred look into the struggle of someone from a working class background going from a shop-lifting teenager to multi-millionaire CEO. 5/5

The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying - Mario Kondo
This book is great if you want to suddenly start chucking out and telling your boyfriend that you're going to become a mimalist, pinterest goddess. Just kidding. It does kind of make me want to start throwing out all my random candles and copper trays, however it's an inteesting book and perspective on cleaning the house/mind. It does have some really great tips though. 4/5

It's Now How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be - Paul Arden
I wasn't overly amazed by this book. I feel like it's kind of average advice, and I didn't sit in the bath reading it and suddenly jump out and want to become CEO of Amazon. It's good advice that can be applied toward university and office jobs, but it's nothing to write home about. 2/5

Alexa Chung - It
I'm sure everyone has read this book by now but I can't say I'll ever read it again. It just sits on my shelf looking pretty. In my opinion, it's a glorified picture book. It kind of bugs me that Alexa Chung couldn't have given more of an insight into her life other than pretty photos of her on her TFL London Underground pass. Yes, really. It was a cute book when I first read it, but now I just feel a bit 'meh' about it. Cute blog photo prop, though. 1/5

Not That Kind Of Girl - Lena Dunham
I love this book. It's such a funny insight into Lena's lfe and details love, relationships and all things life. It's funny, witty and an easy read. I loved the informal writing style and I'll continue to pick this up everytime I look at my book shelf. I feel like I gain something different from this everytime I read it. 4/5

Beauty - Lauren Conrad
You know those generic blogs that write about 'beauty tips' and then proceed to tell you to use a cotton bud to fix eyeliner or plait your hair for 'effortless curls overnight'? This is the book version of those blogs. It feels so far removed from Lauren Conrad it's funny. Hardly any of the tutorial photos are her and it feels very stale with no personality in it at all... And that's what I buy celebrity endorsed items for - the personality. This would probably be a good gift for a 13 year old, but other than that, if I want generic make-up tips, I'll read the Bobbi Brown make-up manual (The most patronising book ever)

Have you guys got any book reccommendations? I'd love to know which are your faves!

  1. I can't stand Lauren Conrad's blog for that same reason. It's like, 'hey did you know you can use black eye shadow as eyeliner?' and it goes viral for some reason, even though we all know that. I have BossGirl and I'm so glad you loved it, I need to read it soon!

  2. Your blog is the most beautiful thing, I adore the design! This was really interesting to me, I've always wondered what these reads were actually like :D I too find such books more interesting when they have a lot of personality and personal flair to them, so I can tell the author had a reason to write it and something unique and important to them to express! xx

  7. I am so glad you feel the same as I do about Alexa Chung's It book! Honestly, it's just because it looks so pretty and that's why no one seems to talk about how little content there actually is in the book. I have yet to find a beauty book that isn't patronising, I like ones written by professional makeup artists like Scott Barnes as they are more than just How Tos. I would recommend his books but then he's not a blogger. Thanks for sharing, saved, because I need to read some of these books. Love your Instagram account btw, your pictures are stunning x
