I'll Say It: I Hate Liquid Lipsticks

Okay, I know this post will be controversial as liquid lipsticks have taken the beauty world by storm, BUT... It's just how I feel. I've tried really, really hard to jump onto the craze, but I just can't.

Let me explain. So you're going out, and you think 'Okay, I'll wear my Colourpop liquid lipstick'. This then means 45 minutes of letting chapstick sink into your lips whilst you do the rest of your make-up, in the hopes that you can look decent after applying the thin coat of what may as well be industrial strength paint, all over your lips. You leave the house, feeling 'on fleek' because your liquid lipstick looks nice, and your lips are a cute colour. Fast forward an hour and a half later, after 3 drinks and some nibbles, you pop to the bathroom. You look at your lips in the mirror: Low and behold, they have transformed into a flakey mess and you have the horrible crusty line on your inner lip. You roll your eyes as you layer over some more product and hope that nobody notices the thicker, crustier part of your lip. Because with liquid lipsticks, there is no taking on and putting back on, unless you carry a tub of olive oil around with you. See my point?

I really wish I loved the liquid formula that people rave about, but I just can't. I find it painfully obvious when someone is talking to me and they have the 'liquid lipstick line' on their lip. When did normal lipsticks go out of fashion? Why don't we all obsess over Mac Velvet Teddy anymore? I miss the good old days when girls thought that Ruby Woo was drying! I can just about handle the NYX Lip Lingeries and Soft Matte Lip Creams, as they are very moussy, but even then, I leave the house prepared for a battle making my lips look good in the bathroom or in my boyfriend's mirror iPhone screen in GBK after a burger. Life is hard when you wear liquid lipstick, and I am a fuss free girl. Okay, that's a lie. But I do try to wear products that will look good even after one bite of a burger.

Am I doing things wrong? Have I angered the liquid lipstick gods by trying out Colourpop and hating it? Maybe I have. But until I am recommended a product that doesn't need checking for cracks every 5 minutes, I'm sticking with lipsticks... The traditional kind!

  1. I've discovered some liquid lipstick formulas are way more drying than others. The ColourPop one you mention I agree is way too drying. I love the shades, but after an hour I can't take the drying feeling. On the other side of the coin, there's the ones from The Balm, the NYX Liquid Suede line and the original Too Faced Melted line, which actually feel comfortable on the lips. Matte lips and I for the most part don't get along, but I love the colors of some of these liquid lippies, so I've started layering a similar color or clear gloss over them and it makes them feel much more comfortable on the lips, your lips LOOK more hydrated and it doesn't affect the staying power. One of my favorite pairings right now is Kat Von D's infamous Lolita with the NYX High Shine lipgloss in Natural.

    1. I love matte lips, it seems like brands are abandoning classic lipstick formula for liquid ones with all their best shades and I hate that!

  3. Nope. I'm with you. I've tried just about every formula out there, and I'm yet to try anything I can actually wear! I picked up a couple of Jeffree Star shades which I am yet to road test, but I don't have high hopes. HOWEVER - have you tried the Colourpop Ultra Satin Lips? Not totally matte, granted, but they are lovely!

    1. I do want to try the Colourpop Satins, but none of the colours are up my street! I want them to release more. I don't get the whole 'budge proof' thing either that people rave about... I'm not a toddler, I can make sure my lipstick doesn't slide across my face haha. I will get some satins try out :) xx

  5. I'm all about liquid lipsticks at the moment! I can't get enough. I do tend to have really dry lips but I found apply NUXE lip balm at night makes a massive difference. The Gerard cosmetics hydra liquid lipsticks are great, I didn't find them drying at all. But then again I don't find the Lip Lingeries drying. I'm sure regular lipsticks will come back in soon! xx

  6. Liquid lipsticks are quite drying to be honest and I much prefer something more nourishing on the lips - I like the NYX Lip Lingeries though, and I don't find they leave a weird mark after eating and drinking but maybe thats just me? The shade I find the best is Bedtime Flirt!

  7. Preach! The only liquid lipsticks I can stand are the Revlon HD ones, which never dry down matte like most do.

  8. LOL at this, I totally agree! Only have a handful of liquid lipsticks I like to wear, they are very drying but I've just come to the conclusion that they all are and none are moisturising like they say. You're right no one wears lipsticks anymore I haven't brought a lipstick in ages either.

  9. I was skeptical about liquid lipsticks, and now they're all I wear. Many of them are very drying (Hello Anastasia Beverly Hills). I love the Milani Amore Matte Lip Cremes, and the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks. The Sephora lip creme is great but not as long lasting. If dry lips are a problem for you I would look for more creme formulas instead of a straight up liquid. They don't always last as long, but they will feel much more comfortable on the lips. If you want a last all day glossy formula, I swear by the Rimmel Provocalips. It can't be worn on it's own (it's way too sticky), but topped with the gloss it will last through ANYTHING and all you have to do is touch up the gloss through the day.

  10. I am no fan of the Colourpop liquid lipsticks, (well I like some of the colors but the formula is super drying). I have tried an assortment of liquid lipsticks from all different brands and while I don't enjoy them all, there are a few that has become my absolute favourite (eg: Guerlain & Kylie Lip Kits & MAC Retro Matte liquid lipstick). If trying from a brand that is suitable for you and a formula that works for you, you may end up liking liquid lipsticks again ^-^

  11. My fave are Sleek liquid lipsticks. They don't feel drying and if you have food and want to reapply it, it won't make your lips crusty or uneven. Brilliant product for a brilliant price :)

  12. I am sooooo glad that you wrote this post! I borrowed one of my friends a year or so ago and it just flaked off and looked horrible. I couldn't understand the huuuuge hype around them and thought I must have been doing it wrong....but clearly not!! I'm now going to read through all these comments and see if anyone has come up with a way of making the damn things work like they do on KJ!!!

  13. I feel like this is a matter of finding the perfect formula for your lips. If you have extremely chapped lips, maybe try the more popular moisturizing ones like Jeffree Star? I love my Nyx Soft Matte lip cream, although it's not considered a liquid lipstick even though it's the formula that started it all. So, I guess you just have to find the right match for you.

  14. Ughh I hate them too! I feel I need to scratch my lips off every time I apply them, and I don't have dry lips at all usually!

  16. I'm actually really on the liquid lipstick bandwagon as I love them! I didn't before but since I started using a lip oil about 15 minutes before the initial application they've been going on so much better and not flaking after an hour either!

  19. I can certainly see where you're coming from, the "but hole" look is not great. I normally only use LL if I'm having a good lips day. The Nuxe Reve De Miel Lip Balm is the only lip balm I use, no others compare,

  21. Nope I agree with you, I actually put one on today and after a ten minute walk to the train station it was looking all flakey and patchy - I usually reach for normal lipsticks over liquid!

  23. You have to get the right one for your lips condition. I do apply a thick lip balm and let it sinks in while I finish the rest of my skincare and later makeup. NYX Lingerie is drying on the lips, even I who loves liquid lipsticks find it drying. Try NYX Liquid Suede instead or OFRA liquid lipsticks, they are some of the most comfortable ones. xx

    1. I do that too! I soak my lips in balm as I do my base and eyes. I've been trying out the soft matte lip creams they're okay, they crack a little though. I'm going to pick up some liquid suedes next! Xx

  25. I do find liquid lipsticks a bit hit and miss on me, but I'm a big fan of the NYX Lip Lingerie formula. Though I don't think I'll ever fully relax wearing them, I too have the fear of the line!

  26. I agree! Most liquid lipsticks are far too heavy, especially for the summer! I rather wear lip stains and tints :)

  27. I really enjoy liquid lipsticks and traditional lipsticks the same - so far, I haven't had any problems with liquid lipsticks. I don't find them drying at all, and my lips look the same at the end of the day! I must be really lucky? One thing to note though is lighter shades seem to come out patchier and have the worst formula across several brands.

  29. I totally agree with you to an extent. I love liquid lipsticks but there's always a time and place. If I know I'm going to be eating and drinking, I'll go for a lipstick or a liquid lipstick that wears down nicely. Since I don't like that awkward lip line they leave either. But some formulas are great since they sit on your lips all day and you don't have to think about touching up or having lipstick on your teeth.

  30. YES! Thank you for this post! I just stumbled upon this and I have tried so hard to jump on the liquid lipstick trend but I feel like its such a fussy process, applying it is a pain, then the worst is if it bleeds into foundation around your lips, and of course the crust and reapplication because like you said once you put it on you are committed for the day! I've long been a lipstick type of girl and long for the days when a new MAC lipstick was the hottest trend! I find a regular lipstick to be much less of a fuss and not as a harsh on my poor lips. Colorpop are the worst ones I have tried by far, Tarte and Jeffree Star have some good liquid lipsticks though but they are still a commitment.
